Ozil goal meme: the 2016 goal behind the AI trend
Put yourself in the runThe Ozil goal meme is a short vertical clip of one famous solo run: a player lifts the ball over the diving keeper, lets the defenders slide past and rolls it into an empty net. It comes from Mesut Özil's late winner for Arsenal at Ludogorets in the Champions League on 1 November 2016, and in October 2026 it became an AI trend where people put themselves, their grandparents and their dogs in the run.

The original Ozil goal at Ludogorets
Arsenal travelled to Sofia to play Ludogorets in their fourth Champions League group game and were 2–0 down after 15 minutes. Granit Xhaka and Olivier Giroud levelled the score before half-time, and the game stayed at 2–2 until the last minutes.
Then Mohamed Elneny played a long ball forward for Mesut Özil. Özil ran on to it, lifted the ball over the keeper as he came out, and found two defenders racing back to cover the goal line. Instead of shooting, he waited, shifted the ball past them as they slid in and rolled it into the empty net. The win sent Arsenal into the last 16 with two group games to spare.
